Gili Islands in Indonesia: A Guide to Visiting This Paradise

You must have seen so many beautiful places that are paradisiacal in their features, but nothing like Indonesia’s Gili Islands. This is a very magical and exuberant place I have ever visited.

Indonesia features complexes of many islands, each having its culture and local cuisine. Similarly, the Gili Islands are also a triplet of small islands in the Bali Sea. It’s pretty much a popular day trip for people visiting Bali.

It’s just what one needs to see: a trip to the Gili Islands. In fact, this is a perfect trip for those who want to eat good food, sleep in wonderful hotels right on the beach, and get massages at very affordable prices. Or, in other words, lie down in the shade and splash around in cool water, you know?

It is impossible to describe how transparent the sea is. With naked eyes, you can see fish; you can even see them at a depth of 20 meters. Any diver who is in love with diving has to go there! And for those just wanting to swim in the sea, the Gili Islands are just about the perfect paradise!

Where are the Gili Islands on the map?

The Gili Islands are located to the east of Bali, off the northwest coast of Lombok, which itself is one of the numerous islands of this archipelago.

The best way to get to the Gili Islands is by boat. If you are staying in Bali, it takes an hour, and if you are staying in Ubud, which is in the middle of Bali, you will need to go to the coast (1 hour) and from there, take a boat to the Gili Islands—about another hour.

Now, if you are in West Sonda, it’s just a five-minute drive by boat—very near!

My trip to the Gili Islands

Well, I wanted some peace and quiet, so I remained in Gili Air, and there were absolutely no regrets. There were numerous restaurants right on the beach with fresh fish, daily massages, and the type of peace and quiet one rarely finds. Let me add, without mentioning, there are no motor vehicles on this island!

I came by ship, and at the hotel, there was a pickup by horse and carriage. You can hire bicycles for as long as you want to view the place there. The island is tiny. You could walk the whole island.

Although it is not as well-known as Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno does have a few bars where you could drop in to hear some good music, drink a few beers, and watch the sun set. Sound like paradise?

What to do in the Gili Islands?

Well, aren’t shade and fresh water enough? Okay! Some resorts offer beachfront yoga classes, which are perfect for those looking to relax! There are also schools where you can simply go and pay for a class, and they’re not hard to find.

Another option is diving tours. There are several excellent tours for all levels, and they are definitely worth it. For those who have little time, this is the tour I recommend the most. This is because it is a truly unforgettable experience, and, as a bonus, you can also get to know the other Gili Islands on this tour.

How long to stay in the Gili Islands?

The amount of time you need to enjoy the island will depend a lot on your availability and patience. As I said, it is a paradise. But it is not a city with a lot of things to see and do. Two days is the minimum time I would recommend to be there and enjoy the vibe of the place. After all, I imagine you will also want to see other places in Indonesia, such as Ubud and Borobudur .

Where to stay in the Gili Islands?

At the Bambu Cottages hotel. This is a super charming hotel right on the beach, with excellent value for money. The rooms are small, comfortable bungalows, breakfast is served by the sea and the bathroom is open-air, an experience I found incredible, as I loved taking a shower looking at the stars.
